Library Code of Conduct

Nevada County Library’s vibrancy is achieved in part by the community’s commitment to respect one another and coexist. Physical and virtual spaces are designed to be used for multiple purposes by our diverse population. Public libraries are precious assets that rely on the stewardship of the entire community.

Patrons and employees are participants in a shared, public use environment and must conduct themselves accordingly. We will be courteous, considerate, and understanding of patrons and staff. We will respect library resources and conduct ourselves in a safe and orderly way.

Patron Conduct Responsibilities

Our community has a responsibility to ensure that Nevada County Library is a welcoming and safe environment for all.

Patrons will refrain from the following:

  • Behavior that is disrespectful, aggressive, or intimidating including but not limited to the use of obscene, racially charged, or abusive language
  • Defacing, damaging, or destroying library property
  • Fighting, running, excessive noisemaking, or odors that are disruptive for others
  • Not being fully clothed, including shirt and shoes
  • Blocking paths of travel
  • Bringing non-service animals into the building
  • Leaving vulnerable individuals unattended in the library
  • Panhandling or soliciting
  • Consuming alcoholic beverages or controlled substances (including tobacco and vaping) or being under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances in a manner that causes a public disturbance

When a library user behaves in a manner that violates policy, library staff may direct them to leave the library facility, may contact law enforcement if necessary, and may suspend the library user from use of the library services.
